Dentistry allows Dr. John Atchinson the opportunity to be both a scientist and an artist, while he helps his patients achieve healthy, beautiful smiles. What he is most excited about is that he gets to make a difference in the world, one person at a time. Dr. Atchinson has been practicing dentistry since 1960 and is passionate about listening to his patients’ needs. He understands the importance of being on the same page when it comes to their dental care today and in their future, and he appreciates being able to help people achieve their dental goals.
Dr. Atchinson finds professional satisfaction in giving his patients the ability to smile with confidence. He also enjoys educating patients of all ages on the importance of their oral health and how it can affect their overall health. Dr. Atchinson loves creating long-lasting relationships with his patients and turning even the most fearful patient into one who looks forward to visiting our office.
Education and Continuing Education
For his dental education, Dr. Atchinson attended Marshall University in Huntington, WV before earning his Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland’s Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. He later served in the United States Air Force Dental Service before completing a general dentistry residency at Denver General Hospital (now Denver Health).
Dr. Atchinson’s commitment to continuing education keeps him up to date, inspired, and passionate about dentistry. Learning about the latest advances and techniques in dentistry enables him to provide his patients with the best care possible.
As a part of his continuing education, Dr. Atchinson is an active member of the Montana Dental Association, the American Dental Association, and the Montana Study Club. In the past, he chaired the peer review board of the First District Dental Society.
He is also one of the founders of the On-Call Dental Emergency Program, which coordinates dentists for both Kalispell Regional Medical Center and the North Valley Hospital emergency rooms. Recently, because of his years of dedication to the field, Dr. Atchinson received the Excellence in Dentistry Award from the Montana Dental Association.
Outside the Office
Dr. Atchinson and his wife Fay have resided in Montana since 1964. They moved to Montana for the hunting, fishing, hiking, and skiing, and have enjoyed them all while raising four children, several dogs, and quite a few llamas. Currently, they have ten grandchildren with whom they enjoy sharing their love of the outdoors. Dr. Atchinson and his wife are members of the First Presbyterian Church of Whitefish and have been involved in numerous activities for the city and county.
